The combination of stunning scenery, numerous ancient sites and miles of beautiful beaches makes the south coast of Turkey one of the most popular destinations for discerning travellers. With its wonderful weather with average temperatures in summer of 30+C, in spring and autumn a balmy 24C, and even in winter the temperature rarely falls below 10C and often reaches 15C making this an all year round destination.
There are many things to do: For the cultural amongst us - the ancient sites of Ephesus, Patara, Xanthos or the Lycian tombs of Dalyan with its ‘therapeutic’ mud baths offer hours of fascination. For shear staggering natural scenery – the Saklikent Gorge or Blue Lagoon at Olu Deniz are well worth a visit. Even a visit to the extraordinary Pamukkale ‘Cotton Castle’ waterfall cascade a little further away is awe inspiring.
For the adventurous there’s paragliding from Olu Deniz’s fantastic Babadag Mountain or scuba diving off the coast virtually anywhere. For pure fun why not try your hand at wind surfing, waterskiing or parasailing.
Or for the more relaxed amongst us why not try one of the many boat trips from Fethiye harbour, the 12 Islands cruise is one of my favourites, but you can also visit Rhodes on a day trip. One must-do trip is a visit to Fethiye’s Tuesday market – if you’re prepared to haggle you should come away with a bargain or two. Its great fun and the Turkish people will enjoy it too and if you don’t find what you need there, Fethiye’s bazaar – open everyday – has a huge range of eclectic Turkish and tourist artefacts.
Fethiye’s night life is always an attraction of the younger generation and the landmark laser beam of the bazaar disco can be seen for miles against the evening sky. If, like most of us, you simply want to sip your beer or wine in the warmth of the sun and watch the world go by then Turkey is for you.
